Dear parents,
1. One of the biggest challenges for teenagers is developing a healthy self-identity. This past Sunday at Reach 42 we started a two-week series that challenges our teenagers to develop identities based on God's standards, not culture's standards. Our culture says we should identify ourselves by our physical, intellectual, and social abilities. But God is more concerned with our inner being-our hearts. Abilities and skills and talents matter, of course, but Christians can cultivate lives of character, and identities that reflect God's heart. Find time to talk with your teenager about his/her identity. Here are some possible questions you could use:
- How do you define "inner beauty" or "inner strength"?
- What do you think it means to be a person "after God's own heart"?
- What plans do you believe God has for your life?
Talk about your own experiences in discovering God's plan and purposes for your life. Emphasize how you appreciate all of your teenager's gifts and talents and skills, but ultimately what matters is the condition of their heart.
2. A new Sunday School class is coming to Salem! Starting Easter Sunday at 10:00 I'll be leading the Reach 42 Sunday School Class in the Paramore Bldg. Everyone in grades 6-12 will be welcome. This class will be the only class for grades 9-12 and a second option for our middle school youth to their current class. It will be very informal, conversational and will include a light breakfast each Sunday.
3. This past Wednesday night we started watching Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" in remembrance of the price Jesus paid for us and to remember His victorious resurrection. During this Easter season, I think the film will have special meaning to students and strengthen their relationship with our Savior. We will watch the second part of the film next Wed. night (3/31) and finish the film Easter morning during Sunday School. Prior to each viewing we'll be reading a chapter from the Bible to be sure students understand the Biblical connections to what they see in the film.
4. I have asked our youth to serve this Saturday morning at the Easter Egg Hunt. Many have told me they would help but I need parents to help them with the follow through. Bridgette would like to have our youth volunteers at Salem at 8:45am. I will be at church at that time, as well. Please speak to your child about this and help to get them there. Thanks!
5. Reach 42 will not meet this Sunday (3/28) due to Sunday Night's Easter drama (please encourage youth to attend) and due to students serving Sat. at Easter Egg Hunt.
6. The middle school conference youth event, Kaleidoscope, will be held April 9-11 at Camp Don Lee. We have 5 middle school youth registered to attend. More details will be coming to these students in the week to come. Please be praying for our youth attending that they'll have a special encounter with God that weekend!
7. We're attending a Wesley Open House 4/15 for 11 & 12 graders. I'll be going and will be taking the church bus from Salem at 5:00. Read this message from Wesley Foundation President for more info:
Hello,
My name is Elizabeth McGee and I am the student officer president at the Wesley Foundation at ECU. We are having a special event just for you and your youth! We are inviting the 11th and 12th graders in your youth group to come experience a night of campus ministry at the Methodist Student Center. The Wesley Foundation is a home away from home for students at ECU and Pitt Community College, but where ever your students may be going to school, we feel it is important for them to get plugged into a Christ-centered campus ministry!! It can make all the difference! Here are the details:
Who: 11th and 12th graders from any local churches in the Greenville area and other surrounding areas.
What: A "High School Night" where youth can come and learn about the importance of campus ministry.
When: April 15, 2010. A free dinner will be served at 6pm. Come around 5:45 for a time of fellowship.
Where: At the Methodist Student Center, 501 E. 5th Street, Greenville, NC, corner of 5th Street and Holly. Call ahead for parking information.
Why?: Staying connected to the body of Christ during one's college years can make the difference between feeling supported and loved and just plane lost! This will be a chance for youth to not only learn about the Wesley Foundation at ECU but also other Methodist campus ministries around the state.
8. Rally Day
April 25 (time TBA)
For Youth Groups
Rally Day is an afternoon gathering of youth groups from local churches across the Conference - a time for fellowship in faith, worship in praise of God, and a celebration of the place and role of youth in the life of the church. The theme for Rally Day is EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY. Being a follower of Jesus Christ is not an every now and then or once in awhile or when I feel like it deal. A true disciple of Jesus Christ is 24-7-365. That’s the only way to be a Christian – every day in every way. Rally Day will feature a carnival of recreation and fellowship activities. Youth groups from local churches are invited to sponsor various activities at Rally Day. We will have inflatable games, volleyball, soccer, softball and much more! After this time of fellowship, we will come together for a worship service with music and messages of Christian faith. We also invite youth groups to share with us in leadership of worship through music and drama. While we will have an offering for Youth Service Fund and refreshments may be available for purchase, there is NO cost to Rally Day. PRE-REGISTRATION TO ATTEND IS NOT REQUIRED. Registration of sponsored activities or participation in the leadership of the worship service is required.
Thanks for your love for your teenager. Please continue to pray for our youth ministry and let me know how I can pray and support you and your child. Have a blessed weekend!
